The Barns at Hunsbury Hill

The Barns at Hunsbury Hill are on Harksome Hill on the southern edge of Northampton. Even so, the venue is perched on a hillside looking out over the countryside, and you'd never guess the town's right there.

It's a Grade II listed barn, restored with exposed stone and beams. And it's about 10 minutes from the M1, according to the venue.

The ceremony

The Main Barn is licensed for civil ceremonies for up to 85 guests, the venue's website says, so you can do the ceremony and party in one place without anyone getting in a car. You'll book the registrar yourself, and there's a fee for holding the ceremony there.

It's a good pick for couples who want the barn look without travelling deep into the countryside. Guests coming from Northampton or the M1 can be there quickly, and there are plenty of hotels nearby. Ask about their midweek rates and packages too, as they publish examples on their blog, and Friday or weekday dates can stretch the budget a long way. They hold wedding fayres too.

The rest of the day

Guest numbers can grow in the evening (up to 180, per the venue). You get exclusive use of the venue and grounds, so no bumping into another wedding party on the way to the loo, as they put it. The courtyard and gardens give you some pretty spots for photos.

There's free parking, which matters more than you'd think. Check the rates page for how their weekday and weekend hire works. Remember to factor in time for the registrar booking, as dates can fill up in summer.

Entertainment ideas

A smaller barn suits close-up magic perfectly. Jamie Docherty has the Magic Circle letters after his name and is great at drinks receptions where people are standing in little groups. In the evening, fairy lights and bunting plus a photo booth are a good match.
