Deene, near Corby · Country estate

Deene Park

Deene Park is a family home on the edge of Corby, and the family host private weddings on a limited number of dates each year. Which tells you two things. It's personal, and you'll want to get in early.

There's no single wedding room here. Instead the estate has three outdoor settings, each with its own feel, and you build the day around the one you pick.

Three very different sites

The Walled Garden has a Garden Pavilion for the ceremony, a semi-permanent marquee and drinks among the formal gardens. Dibbins Wood is a natural glade in a 90-acre wood, set up for tipi weddings, and the venue says it's licensed for legal or celebrant ceremonies among the trees. Then there's Lakeside, a site for marquees, sailcloth tents or tipis with views back over the house and gardens.

The venue's website gives a range of 60 to 400 guests across the sites, with Dibbins Wood topping out at 150.

Planning a day at Deene

Because it's tent-based, you'll be thinking about things a hotel would handle for you: lighting, heating if it's a cooler month, and where everyone's sleeping. The weddings page doesn't mention guest rooms. But the payoff is a wedding that feels like it's on your own private estate, which is pretty much what you're getting.

Do a proper site visit for whichever spot you're keen on, ideally at the time of day your ceremony would happen. Light in a wood at 2pm is very different from light by a lake at 5pm. And ask early about access for caterers, toilets and power, because with a tent wedding those details sit with you and your suppliers. Get them sorted and the rest is the fun bit.

Entertainment ideas

Woodland and lakeside weddings suit entertainment that moves around rather than needing a stage. A close-up magician such as Jamie Docherty can mingle through the drinks reception and keep things ticking while the light's good for photos. Bringing children? A children's entertainer in a corner of the marquee keeps them happy during speeches.

Tipis and sailcloth tents can be a bit dim once the sun's down, so if you book a photo booth, it brings its own lighting.
