The Talbot Hotel

The Talbot is on New Street in the middle of Oundle, a pretty stone market town in the north-east of the county. It's a historic hotel run by the Coaching Inn Group, with an eatery, a coffee house and bedrooms.

Not a sprawling estate, then. But if you love Oundle, and plenty of people do, getting married right in the town has a lot going for it.

The rooms

The largest space is the Westgate Suite, which the venue's website says holds up to 110. The Whitwell Suite takes medium-sized parties of up to 50, which suits a smaller wedding or an evening do with a buffet. There's also the Oak Table for cosy meals and the little Drummingwell Room for up to 10.

The hotel describes its weddings as refined and full of character, and it's had a lot of practice with celebrations of all kinds. Oundle is lovely for photos. Stone streets, old buildings, and plenty of character within a few minutes' walk. If you're having a church service in town, a reception at the Talbot afterwards keeps everything on foot, which guests will appreciate. Just check parking arrangements with the hotel for anyone driving in.

Staying in Oundle

The Talbot has 34 rooms, so a good chunk of your guests can stay where the party is. And everyone else is in a walkable town with pubs and cafés for the morning after. Easy.

Entertainment ideas

Town-centre hotel weddings tend to have smaller, cosier rooms, which is ideal for close-up magic. A magician like Jamie Docherty can work table to table during the meal, which keeps things lively between courses. For the evening, a compact audio guest book doesn't take up much room and you'll treasure the messages.

Little ones on the guest list? Book a children's entertainer for the Whitwell Suite while the adults have their speeches can be a real lifesaver.
